Canada: Motorist facing impaired driving charge after officer hit by car in Vaughan
A 53-year-old man is facing an impaired driving charge after a York Regional Police officer was struck and pinned by an SUV in Vaughan last night. It happened at around 11:30 p.m. on Rivermill Crescent, a residential street in the Major MacKenzie Drive West and Bathurst Street area.
Officers went to a home on the street after someone called police to report that an unknown man was sitting in a strange vehicle in the driveway.
Police arrived to find the man asleep behind the wheel of a running black Infinity SUV. After waking the man up and speaking to him, police determined that he was impaired.
Then, as one of the officers was walking back to the cruiser parked at the bottom of the driveway behind the SUV, the driver put the vehicle in reverse. The car struck the officer and pinned him between the two vehicles, police said.
The male driver was arrested at the scene and tested by a drug recognition expert, who determined that he was impaired by some sort of drug.
The officer was freed and taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries. He was released and is expected to be alright, police said.
Ramin Tahmasebi of Vaughan has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous operation causing bodily harm and demand by evaluation not complied with.
