Texas: Police chief struck by 18-wheeler remains in local hospital

Groesbeck police Chief Chris Henson was injured Tuesday morning when he was struck by an 18-wheeler while directing traffic at a congested downtown highway intersection. Henson, who had his back to the truck when he was struck, was taken by ambulance to a Waco hospital, where he’s expected to remain at least overnight, Groesbeck Mayor Ray O'Docharty said Tuesday afternoon.

He suffered a broken tailbone, a dislocated collarbone and received a black eye when he was run over by the rear wheels of the rig, whose driver was in the process of making a turn to the intersection, Groesbeck O'Docharty said.

Henson was directing traffic at Yeagua and Ellis streets in downtown Groesbeck when the rig, owned by Leon County, struck him, Department of Public Safety Trooper D.L. Wilson said.

Yeagua is the street name for State Highway 164 as it passes through the town and Ellis is the name for State Highway 14.

The accident happened at around 8:10 a.m.

“I didn’t see the accident, but I came back to the front of the store and saw him lying in the street,” a clerk at nearby convenience store said.

The convenience store cashier said at that time of the morning traffic in the downtown area is congested and it is routine for police to direct traffic there until traffic clears out.

Department of Public Safety troopers were at the scene to investigate the accident, Wilson said.
