Maryland: Officer Hit By Car in Bay Bridge Crash

A crash on the Bay Bridge Tuesday night backed up traffic for a couple miles and injured a Maryland Transportation Authority Police officer, who was hit by a car, authorities said. The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. near Route 50 East and Whitehall Road, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. Traffic backups were reported from exit 31 to 29.

A driver hit a parked police car on the bridge, which then struck the officer and a second person standing in front of the car, the fire department said.

The MDTA officer was taken by Maryland State Police helicopter to Shock Trauma with injuries which were serious, but not believed life-threatening.

Authorities say the second patient was taken to Queen Anne’s Emergency Center with minor injuries, while the driver of the striking vehicle was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center with minor injuries.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police is investigating the collision. No names of those involved have been released.
