Ohio: Suspect who allegedly struck Franklin County deputy with car identified

A deputy with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office is recovering at Grant Medical Center after investigators say he was hit by a car during a pursuit early Sunday morning.

The deputy who was hit is a corporal and has been with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office for ten years. Investigators say he has minor injuries on the left side of his body.

One of the suspects was apprehended shortly after the incident. The other still on the run has been identified as 24-year-old Lamont Fowler. Authorities say he is considered dangerous.

The incident happened on Overbrook Service Drive around 2:30 a.m.

Investigators say it all started during a traffic stop. The corporal was trying to get information from the people who were in the car, but they took off and led deputies on a brief chase.

The chase ended on Overbook Service Drive, which is a dead end street.

Law enforcement officials say as the corporal was getting out of his car the suspects sped up, went right after him with their car and took off.

"We are very fortunate and thankful that corporal was not seriously injured especially with what's going on right now with law enforcement deaths and what we've seen across the nation," said Jim Gilbert who is the Chief Deputy for the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.

Chief deputy Gilbert says the corporal's partner, who was with him at the time, fired shots at the suspects' vehicle. Police searched the area in their chopper and on ground.

They found the suspects' vehicle at another location.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is working with Columbus Police on the investigation.
