Ohio: Sheriff's officer hit by car in North Linden; driver sought
A Franklin County sheriff's corporal was struck by a car and another deputy fired his gun at the vehicle as it sped away in North Linden early Sunday. Cpl. Frank Rhodes, 30, was treated for minor injuries at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. The Franklin County sheriff's office has charged Lamonte Fowler, 24, of the South Side, with felonious assault. He's accusing of driving the car that struck Rhodes on Overbrook Service Drive around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Fowler remained at large Sunday night.
The following account is outlined in Franklin County Municipal Court records: Franklin County deputy sheriff Daniel Adkins and Rhodes stopped a Chrysler 300 on Cleveland Avenue at Elmore Avenue in North Linden. Adkins approached the vehicle, obtained information from the driver and returned to his cruiser. He checked the information and suspected it was false.
When Adkins walked back to the car, it was driven off. After a chase, the vehicle stopped at a dead end on Overbrook Service Drive. Adkins and Rhodes got out of the cruiser to make an arrest.
The car then made a U-turn and struck Rhodes, catapulting him into the air. Adkins fired at least one shot.
The car was recovered a short time later on Thornapple Drive on the North Side. A passenger in the car has not been charged, Franklin County Sheriff Zach Scott said.
