New York: State trooper struck in vehicle while helping motorist
A Corning man faces a felony charge after police say he struck a New York state trooper with his vehicle early Friday while she was stopped to provide traffic control for a disabled vehicle. The accident took place at about 12:37 a.m. near the Cohocton exit of Interstate 390 in northwestern Steuben County, according to state police at Bath.
Trooper Nicole Cowdrick was parked in the southbound passing lane of I-390 with all emergency lights activated while VanWormer's Towing hooked up a disabled vehicle, state police said. A vehicle operated by Casey L. Brown, 33, of Powderhouse Road in Corning, was southbound in the passing lane when he struck Cowdrick's vehicle from behind, troopers said.
Brown and Cowdrick were both transported by Cohocton Ambulance to Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, where they were treated and released. Brown was later arraigned in Town of Cohocton Court on charges of first-degree reckless endangerment, a felony; driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor; and numerous vehicle and traffic charges.
New York state's "move over" law requires drivers to slow down and change lanes or provide as much space as possible when passing stopped emergency vehicles. Town Justice Ronald Snyder sent Brown to the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 property bond. He is scheduled to reappear in Town of Cohocton Court at 9 a.m. March 4. The Steuben County Sheriff's Office and Cohocton Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
