New York: Ridge Culver firetruck involved in multi-car crash on Bay Bridge

A firetruck was involved in a multiple-car crash Sunday on State Route 104. The Ridge Culver Fire Department was responding to a minor crash on Bay Bridge when their truck was struck from behind.

As the firefighters were exiting the vehicle, they noticed a car coming up fast behind them. In a split-second decision they re-entered the firetruck and braced themselves for impact.

The fast-arriving vehicle hit the driver's side rear of the truck and continued into the center barrier, leaving the occupant trapped. A chain reaction, involving ten vehicles in three separate crashes, occurred after.

The firefighters in the firetruck did not suffer from any injuries and the person trapped was extricated and taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

One other person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
