New York: Geneseo firefighter expected to be okay after being struck by vehicle on Route 390

A firefighter was hit by a vehicle Friday night on Route 390 in Geneseo.

The fire chief tells News10NBC the firefighter is expected to be okay. We're told he was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with a minor arm injury after being hit.

Deputies closed down Route 390 between exits seven and eight Friday night following weather-related crashes -- including the firefighter who was hit -- but it has since been opened up again.

The Geneseo fire chief told News10NBC the firefighter had a crew working in the median of 390 after a car went off the road.

Geneseo Fire Chief Andrew Chanler says, "Just after that another car, due to road conditions and more than likely speed, struck the original vehicle involved that we were there to assist. Subsequently, that vehicle also struck one of our firefighters."

The crash was one of a number of accidents on I-390 Friday night between exits seven and eight. A lake effect snow band moved right through central Livingston County Friday evening, leaving a thin layer of snow on the road. Law enforcement decided to shut down the southbound lanes of the highway for over an hour as a result.

The Geneseo fire chief says that's why the Move Over Law is so important. The law that requires drivers to both move over and slow down when coming up on an emergency vehicle with flashing lights.

Chanler says, "You see that people think they're slowing down but actually they're not slowing down enough for what the road conditions might be -- the limitation on traffic and the flow. So people generally don't seem to slow down enough."
