Florida: Good Samaritan who stopped to help motorcyclist struck and killed
A woman who stopped to help a motorcyclist after a crash was then struck and killed herself, the Florida Highway Patrol said. She was identified Sunday night as 33-year-old Tina Martin, of New Smyrna Beach.
The crash took place at about 3:25 a.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 1 south of Port Orange, Sgt. Kim Montes said.
The motorcyclist, a 23-year-old Port Orange man, lost control of his bike and ended up flipping in the center median, Montes said. He was thrown off the bike and onto the northbound lanes.
A 33-year-old New Smyrna Beach woman stopped and got out of her car to help the motorcyclist, Montes said.
As she was kneeling over him, both were struck by a car headed northbound driven by James Nichols, 52, of Daytona Beach, Montes said. A second car behind the first, driven by Penelope Ferguson, 39, of Port Orange, then struck the motorcyclist again.
Both the woman and motorcyclist were pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcyclist's name was not released pending notification of his family.
The investigation into the incident was continuing.
