Arkansas: Suspect who hit officer said "he should've moved

A man, who a deputy said laughed when questioned about hitting an officer with a vehicle, is out of jail. Court documents state Grant Long, 20, of Batesville was arrested on Sunday for aggravated assault, a felony.

Sharp County Sheriff's Deputy John Marlow states he and other officers, including Cave City Police Officer Trint Milligan, were called to Conyers Road to investigate vehicles driving past a home. After making traffic stops in the area, officers found out a party was going on in the area. Officers were told "a pin was dropped" for the party location and those invited were supposed to use a Global Positioning System (GPS) to find the party.

Officers were also told by a teen they interviewed that underage drinking was taking place at the party.

When they arrived at the party, Marlow stated that about 50 to 60 teens and young adults were standing around a bonfire.

Some attending the party ran from officers into nearby woods while others were stopped and a search was conducted. Partygoers were then separated into groups based on age and whether or not they had been drinking.

During interviews a maroon, 4-door hatchback vehicle tried to drive away from the party.

Marlow stated he heard Milligan yell at the driver to stop the car. Milligan, according to the court documents, identified himself, was wearing a uniform and was holding a flashlight while trying to stop the car.

The driver did slow down, but never came to a stop and hit Milligan, according to Marlow's statement.

Milligan hit the driver's window and told them to stop when the driver "accelerated and sped from the scene." The officer pursued the car through a field and made two arrests.

Long was identified as the driver. His passenger, the actual owner of the car, told officers he passed out in the passenger's seat and did not know who was driving his car.

Marlow tried to speak with Long while he was handcuffed in Milligan's patrol car. The deputy states Long was laughing as he spoke with him.

When asked if trying to run over a police officer was funny, Marlow stated Long said, "He should've moved."

Long was taken to the Sharp County Jail and was released a day later.

Those not drinking at the party were told to take those who were drinking home.

Another unidentified individual who was intoxicated was taken to the jail after "becoming unruly at the party."
