Texas: Chambers County deputy struck by intoxicated driver
A call from a concerned citizen about an intoxicated driver came too late Sunday as that same driver ran into a Chambers County deputy helping a motorist with a flat tire, and put both in the hospital with broken bones.
Jermey Avalos, 38, has been charged with two counts of intoxicated assault and possession of synthetic marijuana, according to Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephen Woodard.
DPS received a call Sunday morning from someone who saw a driver who seemed intoxicated or distracted. A trooper went out to look for the driver on I-10, but didn't find him fast enough to prevent this accident.
The Chambers County deputy was helping a motorist with a flat tire on I-10 eastbound near milepost 800 around 11 a.m. Avalos veered onto the shoulder of the three-lane roadway where the deputy had his vehicle parked with emergency lights flashing. Avalos struck the deputy's vehicle, then hitting the deputy and the civilian he was helping.
The two were brought by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital. The deputy had three broken bones in his foot and leg, and the civilian also had broken bones. Both are in stable condition.
Avalos was also brought to the hospital to check for injuries. After he had blood drawn and was deemed healthy, he was brought to Chambers County Jail for booking.
