Tennessee: Officer struck by vehicle during stop

A Crossville police officer had his foot run over by a vehicle that he had come into contact with during a routine patrol after the driver sped away to avoid arrest, according to reports. Ptl. Camden Davis was not seriously injured in the incident and was able to apprehend the person identified as the driver. A second man fled the scene on foot and two other occupants of the vehicle — two women — stayed with the car during the foot chase and were not charged.

Charles Robert White, 25, 1114 Al Goss Rd., is charged with felony aggravated assault, four counts of reckless endangerment, evading arrest, resisting arrest, failure to exercise due care and driving on a suspended license. He also was served an attachment ordering him to serve 11 months and 29 days in jail.

Charges of evading arrest and failure to stop for an arrest, frisk or search are pending against the 24-year-old Taylor St. male who fled from the scene.

The incident occurred Sunday around 7 p.m. near the Eco Travel Plaza off Genesis Rd. when Davis conducted a traffic stop for a light law violation. Davis wrote in his report that as he approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly sped away, running over the officer’s left foot.

Davis returned to his patrol car and started to pursue the fleeing motorist who was failing to yield to other drivers as he passed through intersections. The 2000 Pontiac Grand Am then turned into the Pilot Travel Plaza and was driven to the rear of the parking lot where the driver jumped from the car and fled into a nearby field on foot.

Davis and his K-9, Arlo, chased the suspect and the man was caught by the police dog and held until taken into custody.

White was taken to Cumberland Medical Center where he was treated for a dog bite and then taken to the Justice Center where he was booked and jailed.
