New Jersey: Jersey City officer struck during traffic stop
A Jersey City police officer was struck early this morning while trying to pull over a vehicle, according to reports. A white Dodge van was spotted going southbound in the northbound lane of Route 185 this morning at 5:13 a.m., according to a police report. The van was approaching two Jersey City police officers in a marked car, the report states.
Officers activated the lights and siren on their car to try to stop the van just north of the turn for Route 440, according to the report.
The driver of the van, Richard Mooney, 29 of Bayonne, tried to make a u-turn, but his van fishtailed and knocked an officer who was outside the police car to the ground, according to the report.
The officer who was hit struck the van with his hand and told the driver to stop, according to the report. Mooney tried to flee northbound and traveled for about 200 feet before stopping, the report states.
Both officers then approached the van, and Mooney drove off for a second time before stopping again, the report states. One of the officers opened the door and placed Mooney under arrest without incident, according to the report.
The van was impounded, and Mooney was brought in for processing according to the report. Mooney was charged with eluding an office and aggravated assault on a police officer, the report states.
The officer who was struck was taken to Jersey City Medical Center – Barnabas Health and was treated for back and neck pain.
