Michigan: Tow-truck driver struck in semi slide-off on I-94
A tow-truck driver attempted to run for safety but was struck during a crash on I-94 near Niles Avenue Monday morning and was taken to Lakeland Hospital in Saint Joseph.
Michael Polaskey, 39, was operating the tow truck outside at 11 a.m., assisting with a single vehicle slide-off accident, when a semi-tractor-trailer lost control and slid into the tow vehicle, according to a news release from the Berrien County Sheriff's Office.
The momentum of the semi pushed the tow truck and semi off the road and into the tree line, striking Polaskey, of Mike and Sons towing in Benton Harbor.
The semi-tractor-trailer belonged to Jack Russo Corporation of Wayne, and the driver, Craige Poparad, 58, was cited for traveling too fast for conditions.
The right lane of I-94 was closed for approximately 1.5 hours. when the accident happened.
Berrien County Sheriff was assisted by Michigan State Police, Medic One and Michigan Department of Transportation.
