Maryland: Tow truck driver seriously injured after being struck while helping motorist on I-70

A tow truck driver was seriously injured when he was struck by a car Thursday night while standing on the shoulder of westbound I-70 near U.S. 15/340. Both westbound lanes remained closed as of 8 p.m.

The crash occurred around 6:45 p.m. when the driver of a Volkswagen Passat slammed into the back end of a Ford F350 that the tow truck driver was attempting to tow, according to Maryland State Police Trooper 1st Class Justin Ardinger. The Passat spun out and struck the tow truck driver, who was standing outside the vehicle, Ardinger said. The driver of the Ford was also outside the truck at the time, but was unhurt, Ardinger said.

The Passat’s driver had minor injuries, according to the trooper. That person and the tow truck driver were taken by ambulance to Meritus Medical Center.
