Florida: Video shows Florida trooper hit by car
The Florida Highway Patrol released dash cam footage Monday showing a trooper hit by a vehicle off the Florida Turnpike. The crash occurred in Palm Beach County in October but the video was just released as a reminder of the Move Over law.
Trooper Mac Mickens, 60, was in an emergency lane of the highway while making a traffic stop. His patrol car's emergency lights were on and Mickens was outside his vehicle. The driver of a Toyota Rav4 veered off the roadway and struck Mickens and his patrol car.
The trooper suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the Rav4 and two people inside the original vehicle that Mickens pulled over were also injured and taken to the hospital.
FHP released the video to remind drivers the importance of the Move Over law. When you see a trooper, first responder, tow truck, utility vehicle or sanitation vehicle on the side of the road, you need to move over to give them space, even if they're in an emergency lane.
