Florida man under the influence caused I-10 crash that injured officer
A Florida man was arrested Friday morning on suspicion of DUI after he caused an accident that sent a police officer and another driver to the hospital, officials said. Sgt. Damon McDaniel said two officers responded to a minor one-car accident on Interstate 10 eastbound near mile-marker 35 about 6:50 a.m.
Then about 7:30 a.m., near the site of the fender-bender, a Volkswagen Passat driven by Zachary Kapua rear-ended a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, McDaniel said.
"The Santa Fe went across lanes and struck the police car," McDaniel said. The officer and driver of the SUV were taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life threatening, McDaniel said.
The injured officer was the second responder on the scene of the initial accident. McDaniel said it was raining, and the officer "was providing more light" for the investigation.
Kapua, 28, of Key West, Fla., was arrested on a DUI charge.
McDaniel said the interstate is open and traffic is flowing smoothly.
