Rhode Island: Narragansett woman charged with DUI after striking NK police vehicle
A Narragansett woman is under arrest after allegedly crashing her vehicle into a North Kingstown police cruiser Friday night injuring a police officer.
North Kingstown Police say 54-year-old Melanie Davis of Narragansett was driving southbound along Tower Hill Road in the vicinity of Winsome Drive around 9:15 p.m. when she struck the police vehicle just after the officer entered his marked patrol car which had its emergency lights activated.
After striking the marked patrol vehicle, Davis then traveled into the center median and came to a final rest against the center guard rail. Both vehicles sustained heavy, disabling damage.
Officer Raymond Ho, 29, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for injuries sustained as a result of the collision but was released around 2 a.m. Saturday.
Speaking to NBC10 by phone Saturday afternoon, Officer Ho said he has a sprained left shoulder and is having trouble moving his neck but feels incredibly lucky.
"My life could have been taken away," said Officer Ho. "I could have been paralyzed for the rest of my life."
After an investigation by police, Davis was taken into custody under suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. She was also charged with simple assault after spitting at police after she was placed in the rear of another patrol vehicle for transport to police headquarters.
Davis was also cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test, conditions requiring reduced speeds, laned roadway violation and violation of the move-over law.
