Michigan: Public safety officer has minor injuries after car hit patrol vehicle on I-94
A Blackman-Leoni Township public safety officer has minor injuries after a car rear-ended his patrol vehicle Friday morning on I-94.
The officer, handling an earlier two-vehicle crash, was on the shoulder of the westbound highway about 10 a.m. near Whipple Road when a vehicle hit the back of the Chevrolet Tahoe, Michigan State Police First Lt. Kyle Bowman said.
The officer went to Allegiance Health. He was expected to have some pains, but be all right. His injuries were not considered significant. No one else was hurt in either crash.
The driver of the car, a Saturn, was not paying attention to traffic slowing in front of him because of the initial crash, Bowman said. He swerved to avoid a collision and struck the Tahoe, stopped along the side of the left lane.
State police gave the man a citation for violating "basic speed law," said Bowman, the Jackson post commander who responded to the crash when he heard an officer had been hit. No other police units were immediately available, offering to respond or nearby.
One lane was closed for about 45 minutes, said Trooper Steve Rando, who also was at the scene. The Tahoe has some visible damage but was driveable, Bowman said.
