Florida: Teen accused of running down police officer with SUV asks for bail
The driver accused of running down an Orlando police officer is fighting to get out of jail.
Edward Kelty, 17, is charged with attempted second-degree murder for the crash that severely injured Officer William Anderson in July.
Because of Kelty’s age, he could be out before Christmas even though he was charged with the crime days before turning 18. Kelty was accused of being behind the wheel of an SUV that hit Anderson and took off, leaving him injured in the middle of the road. It was part of the reason the State Attorney decided Kelty should be charged as an adult, which means he will stay behind bars until his trial.
But his attorney filed a motion asking the judge to set bail, saying that Kelty has never been arrested before and he’s not a flight risk.
The law might not give a judge a chance to disagree.
Even though Kelty is facing second-degree murder, state law said he can’t be held without bail because he was a minor at the time of the incident.
A ruling has not been made by the judge in the case but is expected in the coming weeks.
Paperwork filed by Kelty’s family indicates the man’s family has raised enough for his bail.
