Alabama: Collinsville officer struck by 18-wheeler

A Collinsville police officer spent his second night in the hospital after being struck by an 18-wheeler as he got out of his patrol car to assist with traffic at a wreck on Interstate 59.

Collinsville Police Chief Gary Bowen said officer Jeremy Bell had just gotten to the scene about 8:40 p.m. and was getting out of his car when the passing truck side-swiped his vehicle.

“It rattled him around in the car pretty good,” Bowen said. Bell was taken to DeKalb Regional Medical Center and he’s been kept at the hospital for observation, Bowen said. He suffered bruised lungs, the chief said.

The original accident involved an 18-wheeler and a car at the 202 mile marker on I-59. Bowen said two people were transported to hospitals from that accident, but he had no details of the collision.

Alabama State Troopers investigated both accidents.

The driver of the truck that struck Bell’s car stopped at the scene.
