West Virginia: DOH worker struck by vehicle in Mercer County
A Division of Highways flagger was taken to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle in Mercer County on Monday morning. The incident happened at about 10 a.m. on U.S. 19 in Kegley, said Carrie Bly, spokeswoman for the Department of Transportation. The worker, who was cleaning a ditch, sustained head and leg injuries, but was alert and speaking with paramedics. Bly did not have his name or the name of the person who struck him.Bly said because of warm temperatures, crews were working longer into the winter than usual, so she wanted to urge motorists to use caution.More than 1,400 work zone crashes have occurred since 2012, according to data Bly sent via email. That includes crashes that did and did not involve state workers. A DOH worker was killed in a work zone crash earlier this month in Brooke County. The woman, 70-year-old Susan Custer of Wellsburg, was killed when a DOH truck moving at a slow speed ran over her.
