Virginia: 3 injured after accident involving semi, fire truck and police car closes I-85 north
A major wreck has closed all lanes of I-85 north just north of the McKenney exit early Sunday morning. VDOT said the wreck at mile marker 43 involving a tractor-trailer has closed the left and right lanes.
A firefighter on the scene said crews first responded to an accident involving a semi. While crews were working that wreck, about 27 minutes after they were called to to the accident scene, a fire truck and sheriff’s office cruiser were struck.
Officials said one person in critical condition has been airlifted to an area hospital. Two other people in stable condition have been transported to the hospital.
As of 2 a.m., traffic was backed up about one mile. Officials said cleanup was ongoing as of just before 3 a.m.
VDOT said traffic us being routed off of the interstate at Exit 42 to McKenney Highway to to bypass the crash. Drivers can take McKenney (Route 40) west to Boydton Plank Road (Route 1) north and get back on I-85 north at mile marker 48 or mile marker 53.
