Michigan: Local firefighters cautioned following shocking crash in Virginia

A fire truck was split in half following a crash in Virginia. Now, local firefighters are sharing the shocking image on social media.

Firefighters tell Newschannel 3 that a scene like the one in Virginia could happen on any roadway at any time.

Now, first responders are hoping those viral images out of Virginia will hit home for drivers in West Michigan.

A crash so intense it ripped the cab off a fire truck--the jaw-dropping images made the rounds on social media Monday.

"That's why we re-post those pictures to our own people internally, to have them wake up and understand this could happen," said Oshtemo Township Fire Chief Mark Barnes.

The fire engine was blocking off the right lane of a Virginia highway to protect crews responding to a separate crash, when a semi slammed into it.

"So now we're calling additional emergency vehicles out to the first incident and the second incident, it just gets worse by the minute," Barnes said.

Chief Barnes sees it far too often, as drivers don't following the state's "move-over law," requiring them to switch lanes when they see first responders on the side of the road.
