Louisiana: Sunshine woman allegedly attempted to run over Evangeline Parish deputies
A 20-year-old woman is facing several charges including Attempted First-Degree Murder of a Police Officer after allegedly trying to run over deputies with her car, according to the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The incident happened around 8:55 Thursday night near the city of Ville Platte. Sheriff Eddie Soileau said deputies tried to stop Sandra Carry Ann Williams, of Sunshine, as she was speeding on U.S. 167. but she refused to stop.
Williams allegedly sped through a Burger King parking lot in an attempt to evade the pursuing deputy.
She then drove through a neighborhood “running stop signs” and continued onto Chataignier Road (LA 29) where she started to drive “south in the northbound lane and forcing vehicles off of the roadway,” according to Sheriff Soileau.
Williams eventually lost control of her car and crashed into a ditch off of Pine Point Road (LA 1161).
The sheriff said when deputies tried to take her in custody, Williams, “accelerated toward the deputies, striking one, pinning him between the suspect’s vehicle and the patrol vehicle. The driver then turned the vehicle toward the second deputy and attempted to run him over as well.”
The deputies shot at the vehicle in an attempt to stop the pursuit. Williams was not hit with gunfire and continued to evade the deputies, according to Sheriff Soileau.
Deputies were able to finally arrest Williams when her car became disabled on Greenwood Road. She was taken to a local hospital but was released after being cleared of injuries.
Williams has been charged with two counts of Attempted First-Degree Murder of a Police Officer, Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Careless Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Misrepresentation during Booking.
The sheriff added that Williams is suspected to have been impaired at the time of the incident, “Evidence has been collected from her and test results are pending. Charges of Impaired Driving are also pending.”
She is currently at the Evangeline Parish Jail. Her bond has been set at $1 million.
Sheriff Soileau said the deputy that was hit by Williams’ vehicle struck received moderate injuries and has since been released from the hospital, “Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery.”
The deputies who fired their weapons during the pursuit have been placed on administrative leave pending results of the internal investigations.
