Kentucky: Paramedic who died after being hit by car remembered

A Jessamine County paramedic who died just days after being hit by a car while on duty is being remembered Tuesday morning. Officials in Jessamine County, Kentucky, said a paramedic hit by a car last week will be taken off life support. John Mackey died Monday morning at UK Hospital. The 40-year-old had been on life support since being hurt Thursday.

On Monday night, dozens of first responders escorted his body from the hospital back to Nicholasville.  Mackey leaves behind a wife and three children. Mackey's father released a statement saying in part: “He chose public safety to care for others. Many people in Jessamine County are alive today because of his calling."

He said his son will continue to save lives because he was an organ donor. Funeral arrangements for Mackey have not yet been released.
