Kentucky: Jessamine EMS worker struck by vehicle

A Jessamine County EMS worker was struck by a vehicle Thursday night and has been taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. An initial investigation suggests a Jessamine County ambulance was on its way to a call and traveling along Maple Street when its side-view mirror contacted a side-view mirror of a parked vehicle, Nicholasville Police Officer Kevin Grimes said.

The ambulance stopped and the EMS worker was out checking on the situation when he stepped out from between two vehicles. A vehicle driven by a 17-year-old high school student traveling east on Maple struck the EMS worker, Grimes said.

The collision was unavoidable, Grimes noted.

Another EMS worker with the ambulance immediately started first aid and traveled to the hospital with the injured worker, Grimes said. The injured worker was taken to the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center by ambulance.

“His injuries are life-threatening,” Grimes said.

The teenage driver was “uninjured but clearly, visibly shaken up,” he said.

The scene of the collision — along Maple Street between York and Main streets in Nicholasville — was expected to be blocked for a couple of hours while a collision reconstruction team investigated, Grimes said shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday.
