Indiana: Trooper hurt when squad car struck on I-94

An Indiana State Police trooper was injured on Wednesday when his squad car was rear-ended at the scene of an earlier crash on I-80/94 in Lake County, the ISP said.

According to police, at 6:09 p.m. Trooper Davonne Barlow, 29, was stopped in his squad car in the eastbound lanes of I-80/94, just west of the I-65 exit--blocking the left lane to allow a tow truck access to the earlier crash--when his fully marked 2011 Dodge Charger, its emergency lights activated, was rear-ended by Kenneth J. Schiffer, 79, of Three Oaks, Mich., driving a 2009 Hummer.

In Trooper Barlow’s rear seat was the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the earlier crash, Robert Spurr, 59, police said. Both Barlow and Spurr were transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Schiffer, for his part, advised police that he saw lights up ahead, that the lights were getting closer, and that he then “just hit the back of the police car,” police said.

Weather conditions were wet and raining, police noted.
