Canada: Seriously injured tow operator heading home

Abbas Kadir is homeward bound as the tow operator continues to recover from severe injures he received while at a crash scene in August. "He's doing well," son Jon Kadir said. "He's getting back to how he was before."

The elder Kadir has been recovering at the Ottawa Hospital's General campus with trips home on weekends. He's expected to be home for good starting next weekend.

Abbas, the founder of Jonny's Towing, was removing a vehicle on Hwy. 417 near Palladium Dr. on Aug. 26 when he was struck by a passing vehicle. A 19-year-old woman was later fined for having improper tires on her vehicle.

Hearing quickly about what happened, Jon rushed to the scene that day to find his father in a pool of blood suffering from critical injuries.

"He looked dead. He looked crushed," the son remembered. "I went into shock."

But now, Abbas, 46, is using a cane to walk for brief periods thanks to his rehabilitation at the hospital.

Jon said his father is frustrated with the shape he's in, since he's used to being in charge of the family tow company. That responsibility has fallen to Jon.

At the same time, Abbas is grateful for being able to return home. Family and friends are planning to celebrate.

"He's happy to be alive," Jon said.
