Australia: Man arrested over EastLink police officer hit-run
Police have arrested a 30-year-old man over the alleged hit-and-run of a police officer on EastLink on Wednesday. Detectives from Manningham Crime Investigation Unit arrested the Wantirna South man in Box Hill on Saturday morning.
Acting Sergeant Anthoula Moutis said a 46-year-old Thornbury man was also arrested, but police are yet to determine whether he was involved in the hit-and-run. It is alleged the Wantirna South man swerved the car at the officer and accelerated, before running him down.
The officer had tried to pull the car over, which had stolen numberplates, as part of a routine traffic operation near the exit of the city-bound Melba tunnel in Donvale.
The impact caused the officer to bounce into the windscreen of the vehicle before being thrown onto the road, according to police.
The officer's gun fired at some point during the incident. It is not clear whether the officer was firing at the car or whether it discharged accidentally before he was struck.
Police found the car involved - a Ford XR6 Falcon - at a house in Preston on Thursday night.
