Alabama: 2 teens charged after Homewood police chase ends in gunfire
Two Walker County teens have been charged in connection with a police chase that started in Homewood and ended with one suspect shot in the Parrish community. Homewood police today identified the teens as Jackson Wayne Freeman, 18, and Joseph Ryan Brasher, 17. Freeman was shot following the chase. His condition wasn't available.
It began about 1:13 a.m. Monday when Homewood police officers were investigating a suspicious occupied vehicle and an undisclosed hotel. Homewood police spokesman Lt. Eric Hampton said during the questioning, the suspects fled and the chase was on. An officer had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck, he said.
Multiple agencies joined in the pursuit, and deployed spike strips at the intersection of Park Dunn Road and New Oakman Driver. Once the car was disabled, Hampton said, Freeman got out of the vehicle brandishing a handgun.
At that point, a Homewood officer fired, hitting Freeman. He was flown via helicopter to UAB Hospital.
No officers were injured. Hampton said the State Bureau of Investigation is leading the shooting probe.
Freeman is charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, methamphetamine trafficking, first-degree possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and attempting to elude law enforcement. Once Freeman is released from the hospital and is jailed, his bond will be set at $225,000.
Brasher is charged with methamphetamine trafficking, first-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is in the Jefferson County Jail with bond set at $20,300.
