Texas: Crossing guard recovering after being struck pushing student to safety
Midway ISD says the crossing guard struck after pushing a student to safety is recovering and in good spirits. Debra Richter was hit by an SUV Monday while helping students cross Hewitt Drive as school was getting out.
She suffered non life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital Monday night.
News Channel 25's Estephany Escobar will have more on what students and colleagues are doing to help Richter, tonight on the Nightbeat.
Richter has been at Midway since 2003 and also works as a cafeteria worker at Castleman Creek Elementary.
In 2014 she was a recipient of the district's Extra Mile Award, a quarterly award for employees who go above and beyond the call of duty. RIchter won the award for voluntarily donating books regularly to Castleman Creek Elementary for student incentives and awards.
The district says Castleman Creek staff is leading collection efforts for meals and recovery expenses.
Volunteers will be collecting funds to replace the student’s bicycle damaged in the accident.
