South Carolina: Darlington County Fire remembers SCDOT worker Henry Norris
People are remembering Henry Norris, the SCDOT worker who died after being run over by a DOT dump truck yesterday morning. It happened on Mayberry Road in Darlington County when Norris and another DOT worker were out doing regular maintenance work. Norris walked behind the dump truck as it was backing up onto the road, and he was struck by it and killed.
Norris was a volunteer at the Fire Station 15 Lake Swamp in Darlington County for the past twenty years. The community along with Fire Chief, Kenny Stratton are remembered the man who lost his life. Stratton says, “He was pretty much the life of this fire department. He was such a dedicated fire fighter, it was his life other than his family.”
Because of Norris’ position with the DOT, he was also able to pass along important information about road closures and other road projects to the Fire Department. “With the flooding with all the bridges and roads out, he was our go-to person with anything to do with the highways. He came to us before we went to him, said Stratton.”
Norris had a nickname at the fire department that brings a smile to the Fire Chief’s face as he remembered. He said, “Yeah if you say Henry no one’s going to know, he’s Ray-Ray to us, that’s what we call him here… Well, he favored Mario on Super Mario Brothers and he picked that name up and I think that’s what the DOT people refer to him as.”
