Pennsylvania: Manchester Twp. fire police officer struck by car

A York Area United fire police officer directing traffic in Manchester on Friday morning escaped serious injury when he was struck by a vehicle being driven by a fellow firefighter, according to officials. Northeastern Regional Police Chief Bryan Rizzo said the struck officer was transported to York Hospital for observation and didn't appear to have suffered serious injury.

It appears he was knocked down by the force of the low-speed impact, the chief said. It happened at the intersection of Main and Maple streets, according to the York County 911 Center. The firefighter behind the wheel was arriving on the scene of what had been reported about 9:50 a.m. as a house fire in the first block of North Main Street in the borough, Rizzo said, and was driving his personal vehicle.

The struck fire police officer was directing traffic, the chief said.

Both the fire policeman and the firefighter are with York Area United Fire and Rescue's station 5, according to YAUFR Chief Robert McCoy Jr. That's Alert Fire Co. in Manchester Township.

Their names haven't been released. The incident remains under investigation, according to Rizzo, who said several eyewitnesses have given conflicting accounts of how the mishap occurred. "We're trying to sort it out," he said.

McCoy said the fire police officer was still being evaluated at York Hospital as of 1 p.m. Friday.

"I don't believe there's anything serious," he said.
