Massachusetts: State trooper injured in Mass. Pike crash

A state trooper suffered serious injuries Friday night after his cruiser was struck by a tractor-trailer on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Newton, authorities said.

State Police said the trooper was sitting in a Ford Explorer conducting a work detail just before 10 p.m. near the eastbound Exit 17 when his vehicle was hit by the truck. The trooper, who has not been identified, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to State Police. Authorities said he “suffered potentially serious injuries, the extent of which are still being evaluated.”

Officials did not release the identity of the tractor-trailer driver or of the owner of the truck. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, according to State Police.

Eastbound traffic was diverted onto Washington Street in Newton by way of Exit 17, and then back onto the Turnpike past the scene of the accident.

No additional details were immediately available.
