Maryland: State trooper fatally shoots man in Frederick area

A Maryland State Police trooper with the aviation unit shot and killed a man Monday morning in the Frederick area, authorities said. The incident began around 8 a.m. at a Sheetz store in the 1300 block of East Patrick Street.

A Maryland State Police trooper had pulled into the store’s parking lot and was going into the store when he noticed a gold Lincoln Navigator with expired tags. When he ran a records check on the vehicle, he found that it was reported stolen in an armed robbery Sunday night in Baltimore.

He called for backup. A trooper from the state’s aviation command came from a nearby hanger to the parking lot, and the two troopers watched the SUV.

Around 8:40 a.m., a man got out of the Lincoln and went to the back of the vehicle. The man put on a shirt, and the two troopers approached him from their respective vehicles. The man ran and jumped into his SUV as he spotted law enforcement.

At the same time, an officer with Frederick’s police department was approaching the scene in an unmarked car with his emergency lights on when the SUV rammed into him. The SUV hit the police car with such force that it drove the vehicle up over the curb and into the grass, pinning the officer, according to Greg Shipley, a spokesman with the Maryland State Police.

The driver of the SUV jumped out of the vehicle before it stopped moving, and the two troopers approached him on foot. Shipley said a “confrontation occurred,” but did not have further details as to what the incident involved.

At that point, the trooper with the aviation command division fired his weapon. Shipley said the trooper fired more than once and struck the man. It was not known, however, exactly how many times the trooper fired. The trooper who fired and another aviation trooper who arrived on the scene began administering emergency care. Rescuers arrived and pronounced the man dead on the scene.

The man’s identity was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

Shipley said he did not have any information at this time as to whether the suspect brandished a gun, and he did not know if a weapon had been found at the scene. The case is under investigation.

The Frederick police officer who was pinned in his car was taken to an area hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
