Iowa: • Officer hit by car, fires weapon at suspect in Council Bluffs
A Council Bluffs police officer discharged his weapon after being struck by a car Wednesday night.The officer was at Bomgaars near Sherwood Drive and East Kanesville Boulevard at 3:29 p.m. when an employee notified him of a fraud in progress.
The officer was able to identify Adam Thomas, 27, as the suspect. Thomas was still in the store at the time, according to a release from the Council Bluffs Police Department.
Thomas was handcuffed and taken into custody about 30 minutes later.
While officers continued the investigation, Thomas escaped from the patrol car, returned to his vehicle and began to flee the scene.
An officer gave Thomas verbal commands to stop, but Thomas instead struck the officer in the lower torso.
The officer fired several shots, but Thomas was able to flee the scene eastbound.
The officer is OK, but is receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
Thomas is still at large. His vehicle is a newer model light blue GM/Chevy pickup truck with black pinstripes. He was last seen wearing a multi-colored baseball hat, long-sleeved black shirt with a white logo on the back, gray sweatpants and dark-colored shoes.
