Canada: Tow truck driver injured in Highway 417 hit-and-run
Police are asking for witnesses to help them find the driver of a blue minivan that clipped a tow truck driver who was stopped on the Queensway near Parkdale Avenue Thursday night.
The collision occurred at about 8 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Highway 417. The tow truck driver was stopped with his flashing lights activated, assisting a motorist on the right-hand shoulder. Police say the driver of the blue minivan didn’t move over when passing and struck the tow truck driver with his side mirror. The minivan driver, an older man, did not stop.
The tow truck diver was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. The law requires drivers to slow down and pass with caution whenever an emergency vehicles, including tow trucks, are stopped on the highway with their emergency lights on. If there are two or more lanes and traffic is clear, Ontario’s new “move over” law says you must switch into the next lane to give extra clearance. The incident comes just over a month after another tow truck driver was critically injured when he was struck while helping a motorist on Highway 417 near Palladium Drive.
