Georgia: Richmond County Deputy struck by vehicle
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office confirms a deputy was struck by a vehicle early Saturday morning. Lt. Lewis Blanchard posted on his Facebook that Deputy Aaron DiGiacomo was conducting a traffic stop on a suspected drunk driver around 4:00am Saturday.
Deputies say the injured deputy was treated at the hospital for minor injuries. He has been released. This is the entire post from Lt. Lewis Blanchard's Facebook: "So many emotions as I heard the radio tonight at 4am and then responded to an officer in need of assistance. As Deputy Aaron DiGiacomo was conducting a traffic stop a suspected drunk driver stuck Deputy Cam HC Darling's car then the drivers door and car where Aaron was. Thank God that Cam had the second patrol car positioned properly for officer safety and that he was maintaining excellent situational awareness and was able to yell to Aaron just in time to allow him to jump onto the hood of the car. Although he was still struck by the vehicle, he only sustained minor injuries and was released from the hospital after a couple of hours. This could have very easily been another senseless fatality. For the life of me I do not understand why people think it is ok to drive after consuming alcohol....there are just too many alternatives, including planning ahead. As I sat in the hospital room with Aaron, I thought how bad this really could have been and I was very thankful to God that is wasn't much worse. I am very glad that neither one of my good friends was seriously or critically injured tonight and that one of them will just need to miss a couple of days of work.
