Virginia: State Police: Trooper leaps guardrail to avoid being struck on I-81
Two Virginia state troopers are recovering after being injured in a crash Tuesday morning on interstate 81. According to state police, the troopers had stopped to help a disabled tractor-trailer when the accident happened.
Trooper W.L. Stumbo III was sitting in his patrol car behind the tractor-trailer and Sr. Trooper R.W. Hughes was standing out side of his car, according to police.A car driven by 41-year-old Andrew B. Caldwell ran into Trooper Stumbo's patrol car and then hit a civilian car as well.
According to authorities, Stumbo was wearing his seat belt and was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.
Hughes was forced to leap over the guardrail in order to not be struck by the car. He had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Caldwell was not injured in the crash, but he was charged with reckless driving. The driver of the other car he hit was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
