Texas: Hays County deputy struck by vehicle while working traffic in Dripping Springs
A Hays County sheriff’s deputy is on light work duty as he recovers from injuries sustained when he was struck by a vehicle while working a traffic accident on U.S. 290 last week.
At about 9 p.m. Aug. 18, deputies were directing traffic around a semi-truck and trailer that had high-centered on the highway near Holder Lane, sheriff’s office spokesperson Lt. Jeri Skrocki said in a statement released late this afternoon. A vehicle struck a sheriff’s office vehicle from behind, pushing it toward another patrol vehicle and two deputies, Skrocki said.
One of the deputies was “forced to move into the oncoming traffic lane and was struck by a third vehicle traveling at an estimated 15-20 mph,” Skrocki said. He was airlifted to an area hospital where he was not found to have suffered major injuries from the impact, the spokesperson said.
“Hays County would like this incident to remind citizens of the importance of being aware of your surroundings at all times while operating a motor vehicle. Driver inattention and driver distractions can impact numerous individuals in seconds,” the statement read.
Skrocki’s statement did not identify the injured deputy and she could not be immediately reached this afternoon. The accident is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety, she said.
