Massachusetts: Billerica officer struck by alleged drunk driver

A Billerica police officer was hospitalized early Tuesday morning after his cruiser was struck from behind on Route 3 by a Lowell man who was allegedly driving drunk, police said.

Officer Daniel Duggan was manning a detail post just south of Exit 29 while a contractor performed maintenance on the highway, the Billerica police department said in a statement. The emergency lights were activated on Duggan's cruiser.

Around 2 a.m., Duggan's vehicle was struck from behind by a Chrysler 200, allegedly driven by Jeffrey Walsh, 31, of Lowell.

State Police responded to the crash and after a preliminary investigation arrested Walsh for operating under the influence of alcohol and marked lanes violations. He was uninjured.
