Utah: Utah Highway Patrol trooper recovering after getting hit by hydroplaning car
“I do believe this is a small miracle.” That’s what Utah Highway Patrol trooper David Schiers says of surviving a horrific collision. Schiers, 55, was hit by a car earlier this month while he was assisting another driver in a white Ford who had spun out of control during a rainstorm.
Dashcam footage of the incident shows another motorist in a black BMW speeding by, losing control and crashing into Schiers as he was outside investigating the initial collision.
“I just remember the car coming and then it’s more or less a blur,” Schiers told NBC affiliate KSL.
The video footage shows debris fly into the air as the force of the BMW slams into Schiers and the Ford.
The 911 call made after Schiers was struck paints a picture of panic as the caller attends to the trooper who was pinned underneath the Ford. According to reports, authorities had to extricate Schiers from beneath the car.
Schiers was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was treated for a broken back, leg, ribs and a punctured lung.
Released from the hospital on Monday, Schiers is facing months of physical therapy.
“I’m sore everywhere,” he said. “But with the amount of damage I saw on my own film, I think I’m lucky to be alive.”
The husband and father of five was the seventh trooper to be hit roadside in 2015. He hopes that his “small miracle” will remind drivers to be more careful on the roads during bad weather.
