Utah: UHP trooper’s condition improves from critical to serious

David Schiers, the Utah Highway Patrol trooper who was struck last week by a car on Interstate 15, is showing signs of improvement at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, UHP Sgt. Todd Royce told The Spectrum & Daily News on Monday. “Just today, he was able to walk and talk to his visitors. He even has been able to start eating and drinking,” Royce said.

Schiers suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, among other injuries, while responding to a call near mile marker 58 along I-15 in Cedar City on July 6. As Schiers was inspecting the crash, dash cam video from Schiers’ patrol cruiser shows a black passenger car careening out of control and colliding with him and the wrecked vehicle. Sgt. Jimmy Roden of the Cedar City Police Department said responders with the Cedar City Fire Department were dispatched to the scene in response to the initial crash. When they arrived, officials said they found the trooper trapped underneath the vehicle.

The fire department used the Jaws of Life to lift the vehicle off Schiers, who was then transported to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City. The following morning, the trooper was transported to Murray for further medical treatment. Schiers’ condition has improved from critical to serious, Royce said.

“He has done better, but he still has a long way to go. He suffered some leg issues and back issues due to the impact,” Royce said. “It will be awhile before he is back to 100 percent.” He added, “His family has been very thankful for the support they’ve received statewide through this situation, and they will continue to ask for your thoughts and prayers as he makes his recovery.”
