Maryland: Police officer dragged by vehicle as suspect tries to flee

Police say it happened around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday in the Ritchie Manor neighborhood of District Heights.

Everything started on Todd Drive. Police say the officer approached a car. A suspect started to drive away and the officer's arm became caught in the car door.

The officer was dragged several hundred feet before police say the car hit a tree and wound up stopped in a front yard on Alberta Drive. Police say when the car hit the tree the officer was thrown on the ground.

Police say the suspect then ran away.

"The suspect failed to stop for the officer, and endangered the officer and potentially someone else's life by doing what he did," said Cpl. Maria McKinney with the Prince George's County Police Department.

Police say the officer was taken to the hospital and his injuries are not life-threatening.

Police did not name the officer Wednesday night or say the reason he had initially approached the suspect. They also did not have a name or a description of the suspect.
