Kansas: Southwest Topeka work zone sees KDOT vehicle struck for second day in a row
For the second day in a row, the same Interstate 470 work zone in southwest Topeka saw a crash Wednesday in which a moving vehicle struck a parked Kansas Department of Transportation dump truck, said Kimberly Qualls, a KDOT spokeswoman.
Qualls said no one was hurt in the accident, in which a single vehicle about 1 p.m. struck a KDOT truck, which was displaying an arrow board and crash attenuator, on westbound I-470 west of the S.W. 21st Street interchange.
The truck was being used to display a lighted arrow to direct traffic to move over to the next lane, Qualls said.
KDOT maintenance crews were completing pavement repairs on the stretch of I-470 involved when the crash occurred, she said.
She described the accident as a “second reminder” of why work zone safety is important for drivers and workers alike. Wednesday’s accident occurred at a different location from Tuesday’s crash, Qualls said.
She said a tow truck about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday on the same stretch of I-470 struck a parked KDOT truck, which was also bearing an arrow board and crash attenuator. No one was hurt in that accident, either.
