Canada: Driver Dead After Hitting Fire Truck on Highway 427

Toronto Fire Services says a male driver is dead after hitting the rear of a fire truck while driving along the Highway 427. It happened around 8 p.m. on Sunday evening. According to Toronto Fire Captain Adrian Ratushniak, crews were on scene near Browns Line responding to another call at the time of the accident.

OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says the first collision happened around 7:30 p.m., where a blue SUV lost control and struck the right shoulder. The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries, and Toronto Fire came to assist. While attending, an Audi lost control. “The vehicle hit the guard rail and then went sideways broad side into the rear of the fire truck,” Schmidt told AM640.

Ratushniak says the truck was very visible, “It’s actually probably one of our largest fire trucks on the fleet.” The victim was pronounced dead on scene. OPP closed the Highway 427 ramp to Browns Line for the investigation but it reopened just after 2 a.m.
