Arkansas: Police officer struck by vehicle

A Helena-West Helena police officer is in critical condition at a Memphis hospital after he was struck by a vehicle.

The incident occurred Monday around 9 p.m. in the Plaza Avenue area. Lt. Dennis Cox had just recovered a vehicle reported stolen out of Little Rock. Officer Cox was standing beside a wrecker that was preparing the stolen vehicle to be towed, when a vehicle struck Cox.

Lt. Cox was transported to a local hospital where he was then airlifted to Memphis. He is listed in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Cox stopped at the scene and was questioned. Police believe the driver did not see the officer. Arkansas State Police is taking over the investigation.
