Texas: Officer struck by vehicle Friday night still in the hospital with serious injuries, police say
Two Lubbock police officers were assaulted Friday in separate incidents, one is still in the hospital, and the other is fine, police say. The officer who was assaulted after trying to break up a fight between high school-age students is fine and is back at work, Lt. Ray Mendoza said.
Officer Corey Owens--who was struck by his own vehicle while directing traffic when police say impact from a 2001 Buick Century struck Owen’s Ford Crown Victoria—is still in the hospital with serious injuries, Mendoza said. In the past few weeks there have been multiple reports of assaults on police officers in Lubbock. Mendoza said the reason it has been reported more is that Lubbock police are trying to be more proactive about putting information out to the public.
“It’s always happened,” Mendoza said. “We’re being more active on social media. We want the public to know what’s going on in their community.”
