New York: Port Authority officer struck by van while writing ticket

A Port Authority police officer writing a ticket for a van stopped in the middle of the roadway outside a LaGuardia Airport terminal was hospitalized after the driver hit the gas, steered toward him and struck the officer in the leg, authorities said. Responding officers found a 6-year-old child in the back seat of the 2014 Dodge Caravan without a restraint, the authority’s Joseph Pengangelo said this morning.

A computer check turned up an active warrant on the driver, 24-year-old Erick Sanchez of the Bronx, who was arrested on two counts of assault and one of obstruction, Pentangelo said. The injured officer was taken to Forest Hills Hospital. The vehicle was impounded.
